#### Pre-algebra

MEETS ONCE A WEEK FOR THE ENTIRE SCHOOL YEAR

This class is designed to transition students from basic elementary math to the more complex thinking of algebra, with a focus on learning fluency with numbers.  Students will learn to manipulate numbers by analyzing complex problems and solving them in multiple ways. Students will be encouraged to think logically in order to solve a problem, not just to repeat given steps without knowing why.

Our focus of study:

1. Evaluate single-variable expressions.

2. Use order of operations rules.

3. Identify and manipulate patterns.

4. Graph points on a coordinate plane.

5. Use the Distributive Property.

6. Simplify expressions.

7. Solve one-step equations and inequalities.
8. Find mean, median and mode of a set of data.

9. Substitute into formulas.

10. Convert between metric and US units.

11. Use divisibility tests.

12. Find the prime factorization.

13. Find the greatest common factor and least common multiple.

14. Write fractions in simplest form.

15. Simplify expressions with integer exponents.

16. Write numbers in scientific notation.

17. Write fractions as decimals and write terminating and repeating decimals as fractions.

18. Add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions and mixed numbers.

19. Solve proportions.

20. Find probability and odds.

21. Manipulate between fractions, decimals, and percent.

22. Find a part of a whole.

#### Algebra 1

MEETS ONCE A WEEK FOR THE ENTIRE SCHOOL YEAR

This course covers basic algebra topics such as solving equations and inequalities in one and two variables, graphing linear equations and inequalities, working with exponents and factoring.

Our focus of study:

1. Reviewing Number Sense—Memorizing Fractions/Decimals, Squares/Square Roots, Order of Operations, Properties

3. Graphing on a RNL—Compound Inequalities – AND vs. OR

4. Classifying and Simplifying all expressions

5. Solving all Equations/Inequalities (Formulas)

6. Linear Equations – Classifying (Standard, Slope Intercept, Point Slope), Slope, x and y Intercepts, Relations (Functions, Domain, Range), Graphing (Horizontal, Vertical, Oblique)

7. Absolute Value Equations (Solving, Graphing – Transformations)

8.  Finding the Equation of a Line (Parallel and Perpendicular)

9. Solving Systems – 2 equations, 2 unknowns (3 methods – Graphing, Substitution, Elimination)

10. Quadratics – Simplifying/Factoring, Solving, Changing from SF to GF, Graphing

11. Exponentials – Graphing

12. Rational Functions – Simplifying and Solving

13. Percents, Probability, Statistics, Dimensional Analysis

In Algebra 2 our focus of study is on:

This class is for all math levels and gives the student an opportunity to work on  math homework with an expert math teacher available to give hands-on help. This class is a boon to every student, but can be especially helpful if the student needs a little extra help. It also gives mom a nice break. Students can enroll for one semester or both.

#### Junior High Life Science

#### High School Chemistry

This class will use Berean Builder’s Discovering Design with Chemistry and will be taught from a biblical worldview. It is a high school chemistry course designed for students who have completed Algebra 1. This college-preparatory course covers fundamental aspects of chemistry such as the classification of matter, atomic structure, spectroscopy, chemical bonding, molecular geometry, physical change, chemical change, stoichiometry, solutions, ideal gases, acid/base chemistry, reduction/oxidation reactions, thermochemistry, thermodynamics, kinetics, and chemical equilibrium. The course contains many experiments that illustrate various concepts being explored.

Cost: \$100

This class is for all science levels and gives the student an opportunity to work on  science homework with an expert science teacher available to give hands-on help. #### Junior High Writing

MEETS ONCE A WEEK FOR THE ENTIRE SCHOOL YEAR

Cost: \$475

In this class students will practice the fundamentals of writing using IEW’s Year 1 Level B Structure and Style. Students will have the opportunity to grow their abilities through writing reports, narratives, creative stories, essays and critiques.  In addition, there will be a focus on the mechanics of writing including capitalization and proper punctuation.

#### MEETS ONCE A WEEK FOR THE ENTIRE SCHOOL YEAR

Cost: \$525

This will be an engaging and challenging course for students to refine their skills in writing research papers, essays, and conducting literary analysis.  We will be reading through classic and ancient literature, including The Iliad and The Odyssey by Homer, as well as Greek and Roman mythology.  We will be using IEW (Institute for Excellence in Writing) methods in our writing, with a strong emphasis on vocabulary.  Join the adventure!

Literacy is like breathing. We inhale when we read and we exhale when we write. Throughout the course, using a balanced literacy approach, we will explore comprehension and composition techniques and strategies that will grow us in our literacy life across genres and content. We will learn to make our thinking visible through spoken and written words, and we will strengthen our communication and critical thinking skills through text analysis, research, and debate. Together will learn to live and love a literacy life!

This class will provide students with a general introduction to the Spanish language: pronunciation, functional vocabulary related to everyday life, cultural information, and basic grammatical structures. Emphasis will be on the acquisition of listening and speaking skills. The main objectives of the class are to give the students the ability to carry on a simple conversation; to provide the students with instruction that teaches a basic understanding of Spanish speaking cultures, vocabulary, and grammatical concepts; and to enhance their learning by providing real life experiences with native Spanish speakers.

It is the purpose of this class to go beyond the academic, and in a fun, meaningful way create connections that will aid in building life long learning.

#### MEETS ONCE A WEEK FOR THE ENTIRE SCHOOL YEAR

In this class we will build on the basic skills acquired on Spanish 1. This course will reinforce the skills learned in listening, speaking reading, and writing. Emphasis will be on perfecting pronunciation, mastery of basic grammatical structures, and increased communicative proficiency.

#### THEATER ARTS/Dramatic Speech

Cost: \$500

MEETS ONCE A WEEK FOR THE ENTIRE SCHOOL YEAR

The objective of this class is for students to gain confidence in their ability to speak and perform in front of an audience. Side effects may include increased creativity, better listening skills, and improved memorization, empathy, and flexibility.

Many shy and introverted kids enjoy playing a character and having words provided for them instead of struggling with what to say. Our prayer is that this ministers to your children by growing their confidence and tapping into sides of themselves they didn’t know they had.

Class structure will include monologue work, scene studies, and improv. We plan to have a lot of fun.

Theater classes will be led by the husband and wife team of Matt and Ginny Brannon, who met and fell madly in love in the Baylor University Theatre Department. Both graduated with Bachelors of Fine Arts in Performance.

#### home economics and Consumer science

Cost: \$525 (includes a supply fee of \$25)

In this year long class, students will learn multiple lifelong skills including: Family finances, nutrition, and textiles. This class includes multiple hands-on activities and is perfect for students of all ages!
